What to Do in a
Child Emergency

Quick first-aid reference for common paediatric emergencies. Click any card for step-by-step guidance. Call 108 for life-threatening emergencies.

Kid's Care Clinic Emergency Line

For non-life-threatening paediatric emergencies

๐Ÿšจ CALL 108

High Fever (Above 104ยฐF / 40ยฐC)

Especially if child is unresponsive, has seizures, or has neck stiffness

+
  1. 1
Remove extra clothing. Keep the child in light cotton clothing. Do not bundle up.
  2. 2
Lukewarm sponge bath. Use a damp cloth on forehead, armpits, and groin. Never use ice cold water.
  3. 3
Give Paracetamol (15 mg/kg) if child is conscious and can swallow. See Dose Guide above.
  4. 4
Keep child hydrated. Offer ORS, water, or coconut water frequently in small sips.
  5. 5
Rush to clinic or call 108 if fever persists above 104ยฐF or child has convulsions.
โš ๏ธ Do NOT give Aspirin to children โ€” it can cause Reye's Syndrome.
๐Ÿฅ VISIT CLINIC

Febrile Seizure (Fit with Fever)

Sudden jerky movements, stiffness, eyes rolling, temporary unresponsiveness

+
  1. 1
Stay calm. Most febrile seizures last less than 5 minutes and stop on their own.
  2. 2
Lay child on a flat, safe surface on their side (recovery position). Remove nearby sharp objects.
  3. 3
Do NOT restrain the child or put anything in their mouth. Do not give water during the seizure.
  4. 4
Time the seizure. Note start and end time โ€” tell the doctor this information.
  5. 5
After the seizure: Child may be sleepy โ€” this is normal. Visit Kid's Care Clinic immediately after.
โš ๏ธ Call 108 if seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or child does not regain consciousness.
๐Ÿšจ CALL 108

Choking / Breathing Difficulty

Child cannot breathe, cough or speak, turns blue, panicking

+
  1. 1
For infants under 1 year: Give 5 back blows between shoulder blades, then 5 chest thrusts. Repeat.
  2. 2
For children over 1 year: Give 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) from behind the child.
  3. 3
Call 108 immediately while performing maneuvers. Keep trying until obstruction is cleared or help arrives.
  4. 4
If child becomes unconscious: Begin CPR and continue until ambulance arrives.
  5. 5
Visit clinic after clearing to ensure no damage to throat or airway.
โš ๏ธ Never perform blind finger sweeps inside the mouth โ€” it can push the object deeper.
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ VISIT EYE DOCTOR

Eye Injury / Foreign Body in Eye

Object in eye, chemical splash, impact injury, sudden vision change

+
  1. 1
Do NOT rub the eye. This can worsen the injury. Keep child's hands away from eye.
  2. 2
For foreign body: Flush eye gently with clean water or saline for 10โ€“15 minutes from inner corner outward.
  3. 3
For chemical splash: Flush immediately with large amounts of water for 20 minutes. Call 108 and visit clinic urgently.
  4. 4
For impact injury: Apply a cold compress (not ice directly on eye). Do not apply pressure.
  5. 5
Visit Dr. Vibha Shah immediately. Eye injuries can worsen rapidly without proper treatment.
โš ๏ธ Any eye injury in a child is urgent. Contact Kid's Care Clinic at 9898876884 immediately.
๐Ÿšจ CALL 108

Accidental Poisoning / Swallowed Object

Child swallowed medication, household chemical, sharp object, or coin

+
  1. 1
Stay calm. Do NOT induce vomiting unless instructed by a doctor โ€” it can cause more harm with corrosives.
  2. 2
Identify the substance. Save the container or note the name of medication, quantity, and time of ingestion.
  3. 3
Call 108 or Poison Control. In India: 1800-11-6117 (National Poison Control). Follow their instructions.
  4. 4
For sharp objects or coins: Rush to nearest hospital. Most pass naturally but X-ray is required to confirm.
  5. 5
Visit Kid's Care Clinic for follow-up even if child appears fine after the incident.
โš ๏ธ Keep all medicines, cleaning products and small objects out of reach of children at all times.
๐Ÿ  HOME CARE

Severe Diarrhea & Dehydration

More than 5โ€“6 loose stools/day, dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes, extreme weakness

+
  1. 1
Start ORS immediately. Give WHO-recommended ORS (Electral / Enerzal) in small frequent sips โ€” 50โ€“100 ml after each loose stool.
  2. 2
Continue breastfeeding if child is on breast milk. Do not stop feeds during diarrhea.
  3. 3
Give Zinc tablets (as prescribed) for 14 days to reduce severity and duration of diarrhea.
  4. 4
Watch for danger signs: Blood in stool, high fever, signs of severe dehydration (no urination for 6+ hours, sunken eyes).
  5. 5
Visit clinic if diarrhea doesn't improve in 24 hours or child shows signs of dehydration.
โœ… ORS is life-saving โ€” always keep a packet at home for emergencies.
